Mr. Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, son of (late) Mr. Muhammad Sharif(1919–2004), graduated from Government College, Lahore with distinction. He belongs to a family of distinguished business community, started his professional life as a businessman and became the President, Lahore Chamber of Commerce & Industry in 1985. Later, he joined active politics and served as Member, Punjab Assembly during 1988-90; and as Member, National Assembly during 1990-93. He was elected as Member, Punjab Assembly again in 1993 and served as Leader of the Opposition during 1993-96. He became Member of Punjab Assembly for the third term in 1997; was elected as Chief Minister and functioned as such till 1999 when, as a result of military coup, his government, along with the Federal Government, was toppled. He was imprisoned and then exiled. He has played a leading role in the restoration of democracy in the country. Having been elected unopposed as Member, Punjab Assembly for the fourth term, he is presently functioning for the second time as Chief Minister, Punjab. He is a dynamic political leader known for his strong and efficient administration. Better health facilities, educational reforms and economic uplift are his top priorities. He has made extensive travels abroad. His brother and incumbent Prime Minister Mr. Muhammad Nawaz Sharif served as Provincial Minister in Punjab cabinet during 1983-84; as Chief Minister, Punjab twice during 1985-88 & 1988-90; and as Prime Minister of Pakistan during 1990-93, 1997-99, and 2013-Incumbent. *LAHORE, July 04:* Caretaker Punjab Minister for Food, Agriculture and Planning & Development Sardar Tanvir Ilyas called on Caretaker Punjab Chief Minister Dr. Hasan Askari here today at Chief Minister’s Office. Sardar Tanvir Ilyas informed the Chief Minister about various departmental matters. Talking on the occasion, the Chief Minister said that hygienic food keeps the people safe from diseases and added that provision of safe and healthy food items to the citizens is the responsibility of the government. The Food and other line departments will have to proactively work for the provision of neat and clean food items to the citizens, he said. The development of agriculture sector is directly associated with the economic progress. Developed nations have brought agricultural revolution by adopting latest research and technology. It is, therefore, need of the hour that agriculture should be developed on modern lines, he added. He said that effective strategy and planning is essential for durable progress. Planning will have to be made today for providing facilities to the citizens in future, he added. It is the responsibility of the government to devise necessary planning for future needs keeping in view the prevailing circumstances. LAHORE, JULY 04: Caretaker Punjab Chief Minister Dr. Hasan Askari today visited the rain-affected Lawrence Road, Lakshmi Chowk and GPO Chowk without any protocol. He inspected WASA emergency monsoon camps setup at Lawrence Road and Lakshmi Chowk and checked their arrangements for the disposal of water. He first went to WASA emergency monsoon camp at Lawrence Road where he was briefed about water disposal arrangements. On the occasion, he said that administration, WASA and other agencies have ensured early disposal of water despite heavy rains and performance of administrative officers and other agencies in this regard was commendable. I have personally monitored the water disposal activities and reports have also been presented to me about it. I appreciate the performance of administration and WASA for what I have practically examined, he said. Later, he visited Lakshmi Chowk to visit WASA emergence monsoon camp. He said all the line departments exhibited best team work despite heavy rains and worked hard to dispose of the rain water. He said that he has been satisfied that water disposal has been done with continued efforts and added that state is responsible to solve the problems of the citizens and the same is being done in an amicable way. Talking to the media, he said that 38 years record of rains has been broken in Lahore and due to it; water was accumulated on different roads. However, line departments worked as a team to deal with this challenge. Water is accumulated at Lakshmi Chowk whenever it is raining as it is a low lying area. Our ministers also remained in the field, he said. I can understand that citizens faced difficulties due to stagnant water. We would learn from this experience so as to better deal with such challenges if arisen again. To a question, he said that if all the line departments including administration, WASA, LDA and other agencies have not performed, water would have not been disposed of yet. It is the best performance of these agencies that they have ensured the disposal of water by working day and night. The issue is not that who is responsible for this situation but the real issue is how to deal with this challenge and how to solve the problems of the citizens, he added. Certainly, lesson would have to be learnt from this unusual situation to devise effective strategy for future. To a question, he said that cabinet committee for flood is constituted with provincial minister Zafar Mehmood in the chair. This committee is a permanent body and has also held its meetings. This committee was prepared to deal with rains and possible floods. However, torrential rains were beyond human expectations. To a question, he said that Punjab government has formulated a four member committee to ascertain facts of sinkhole incident at road near the GPO Chowk and NESPAK will also submit its report in this regard. Further steps would be taken in the light of both the reports. To a question, he said that it is incorrect to state that concerned departments were not prepared. He said that electricity failure also occurs in heavy rains but no generator related problem arised at any place. To a question, he said that long term planning and funding is required with regard to the issue of water stagnation at Lakshmi Chowk. Civic amenities should be increased and in this regard, funds should also be enhanced. To a question, he said that some objections are raised with regard to general elections but we are fully trying that these objections should be solved at district and divisional levels because we have come for holding free and fair elections and all are given equal opportunities for the elections. Our commitment and efforts are sincere, he added. Along with political parties, the cooperation of media is also required so that the duty could be best performed. Prompt action is taken on complaints, he added. Later, Dr. Askari visited GPO Chowk and congratulated the concerned departments for filling the sinkhole. Opening the road for traffic after filling the sinkhole is the result of your efforts, he added. I am happy that you all have worked like a team. *LAHORE, July 03**:* Punjab Chief Minister Dr. Hasan Askari has monitored the situation arising due to heavy rains in Lahore without taking any rest immediate after Multan visit. He went to GPO Chowk and monitored the situation arising due to ditch. He monitored the arrangements made by administration. He was given a briefing about the situation and disposal of rainy water by the concerned staff. On the occasion, he said that Lahore and other cities have witnessed unusual rains after many years which is a record. All line departments are busy to solve the public problems. To a question about the ditch, he said that this matter will be checked from every respect that why it happened. But now all departments are proactively working for disposal of water. Administration and WASA have done a good job. Work is underway to fill the ditch and it is hoped that if no further rain occurred then this ditch will be filled till tomorrow. He said that it is an important road and ensuring flow of traffic is very essential. To a question, he said that record rains been recorded in Lahore and teams are busy for water disposal and water related problems are being dealt with. He said that investigation and technical committee has been constituted to investigate the incident of ditch and it will identify the reasons for water seepage and why this damage occurred. He said the work which was being done here has not been completed and it is one of the reasons of water seepage. However, committee will present its comprehensive report after investigation and in the light of it, steps will be adopted and action will be initiated. He said that investigation committee will present its report in next few days. *LAHORE, July 03**:* Caretaker Punjab Chief Minister Dr. Hasan Askari visited Multan today and inspected Nishter Hospital and Burn Center. He went to different sections of Nishter Hospital and inspected healthcare facilities. He inquired after the health of the patients and asked the attendants about different healthcare facilities and staff of the Nishter Hospital and prayed for early recovery of the patients. On the occasion, he ensured the doctors of the Nishter Hospital to solve their justified demands according to law. He also visited Burn Center and inspected its different sections and wards where he inquired after the health of the patients. Officials of the health department gave a detailed briefing about the Burn Centre. Provincial Ministers Zia Haider Rizvi, Shaukat Javed, Commissioner Multan Division, VC Nishter Medical College and University, DC Multan and MS Nishter Hospital were also present on the occasion. Talking on the occasion, the Caretaker Chief Minister said that caretaker setup is trying to improve the healthcare sector and for that purpose, health budget has been increased. I have examined the healthcare facilities and I want to do something for serving the ailing humanity. Talking to the doctors, he said that provision of all facilities to the patients free of cost is the responsibility of the state. He said that timely provision of funds to the ongoing health projects will be ensured. One billion rupees are being allocated in the budget of current fiscal year keeping in view the utility of Nishter Hospital-II Project. The emergencies of 13 major hospitals including Nishter Hospital are being revamped and health budget has been sufficiently enhanced. He said that government wants to further improve the provision of health facilities in health sector. The issue of increased number of patients and shortage of staff will be tried to be solved according to the mandate. He said the caretaker government is only setup for peaceful holding of impartial elections. We will not exceed from our authority and power but will draft recommendations for the next government about long-term projects. *****

The Chief Minister has said that each bereaved family will be given eight lakh rupees. He said that all our sympathies are with the bereaved families and government equally shares their sorrow and grief. *LAHORE, July 02:* Caretaker Punjab Chief Minister Dr. Hasan Askari Rizvi has said that provision of quality healthcare facilities is the basic responsibility of the government. Funds will be provided for ongoing healthcare schemes and other public welfare projects. Caretaker government cannot initiate long-term schemes; however, it is our effort that steps should be taken on priority basis for healthcare schemes that can be completed in a short span of time. He said that every possible effort will be made for welfare of the public within the constitutional limits. He said that he will personally monitor the situation by visiting different hospitals. He said that healthcare system is of utmost importance for public welfare and every possible effort will be made to improve the health services within the mandate. *LAHORE, July 02:* Caretaker Punjab Chief Minister Dr. Hasan Askari Rizvi held a detailed meeting with Caretaker Minister for Local Government, Energy and Provincial Disaster Management Zafar Mehmood, here today. During the meeting, different matters including arrangements for upcoming general elections, implementation on electoral code of conduct and steps for dealing with monsoon and possible threat of flood came under discussion. Talking on the occasion, Dr. Askari said that caretaker government is ensuring implementation of electoral code of conduct issued by Election Commission. He said that legal action will be initiated on any violation of electoral code of conduct and every possible step will be initiated for provision of facilities at polling stations. He said that holding of free and fair elections is the first priority of the government. We are committed for holding of general elections in a impartial and transparent manner and foolproof arrangements are being made for achieving of this important object at every level. Provision of peaceful atmosphere for polling will be ensured on July 25 so that voters could use their right of franchise without any fear and danger. He said that all possible steps will be taken so that voters could use their right of franchise independently and video cameras will be used for monitoring the sensitive polling stations. The utilization of information technology will also be made for peaceful and transparent holding of general elections and implementation of electoral code of conduct of the Election Commission will be ensured at every cost. LAHORE, June 30: Interim Punjab Chief Minister Dr Hasan Askari participated in a condolence reference for renowned intellectual and columnist Col (R) Ikram Ullah, who was also main spirit of Pakistan National Forum, organised by the Maulana Zafar Ali Khan Trust. Addressing the condolence reference, Interim CM Dr Hasan Askari said Col (R) Ikram Ullah was not a single person, but he was an institution and the focus of his thinking and intellectualism was Pakistan. His death has created a vacuum which can never be filled. I had personal link with him. He was a man of positive thinking. He said the caretaker setup is totally impartial as well as apolitical. We neither have nor would have any political agenda, he added. In a statement issued here today, the caretaker Chief Minister said that we are here only for the holding of free, fair and transparent elections and would return back homes after fulfilling the responsibility in a proper manner. Lahore June 27: Caretaker Punjab Chief Minister Dr. Hasan Askari reminisced about his memories of life spent in Germany during his meeting with the German Ambassador Mr. Martin Kobler, here today. The Chief Minister said that he has served on Iqbal Chair in Heidelberg University Germany for three years. The German Ambassador expressed his happiness over it and desired to know more about his viewpoints in this regard. Dr. Askari said that he used to give lectures in English language but also learnt the German language during this stay and had an opportunity of increased societal interactions with the people belonging to different nations and cultures in Heidelberg. He said the feelings and ideas expressed by Allama Iqbal in a poem in 1907 near the famous river Necker are also applicable to the present day situation. He also paid rich tributes to the services of Dr. Annemarie Schimmel for the promotion of Iqbal studies. The German Ambassador said that he has gone through the analyses of Dr. Askari published in various international magazines and added that he has been impressed by the strong analyses and would like to benefit from them in future as well. ####
